Some History
Russ Johnson is a foundation member of our club and at a public meeting in 1946 at the age of sixteen he was elected as our first club secretary. He has been a member continuously since then serving as President and secretary for many of those years. In 1982 he was a foundation member of MANZ and served as President for 16 years. Russ is a life member of our club and MANZ.
Russ is still building models or restoring those that he built many years ago and can be seen out at our air-strip flying his 1/4 scale Citabria, his 1/4 scale Cessna Birddog, or his 1/3rd scale Spacewalker and Tiger Moth or any of his many other well built models .
Membership
The club enjoys a strong following of around 60 members flying mostly radio controlled aircraft. Competitions in various classes such as A.L.E.S. Radian, Scale, 2-metre glider and Vintage are held throughout the year. There is currently a strong interest in both Radian and gliding , with regular contests being held. A number of members are slope soaring enthusiasts who seek out their favourite hilltop sites around the Manawatu on Sunday afternoons.
Club Activities
Monthly "Club nights" are held on the 4th Thursday evening, usually with a guest speaker, and members are encouraged to bring along their latest building project for a "show and tell" session. Social events include the occasional bbq, monthly Friday drinks and an annual dinner and prizegiving. Keep an eye on the calendar for event dates and times.
